In this world, magicians can perform magic on/using only mandmade objects (paper, steel, textile, glass, rubber, plastic). I like the way Holmberg developed the magic system. Thoughts: There were a lot of things in this book I really liked. Thane’s past returns, and Ceony is thrust into a harrowing adventure to save Mg. As Ceony begins to learn the paper magic arts under Mg. Ceony is not happy being assigned to become a paper magician (because Magicians in this world must bond to their substrate, and can only do magic on/with that substrate, and the bond is for life) – she’d had her heart set on becoming a metal magician. Thane is a paper magician – probably the least cool magical art there is. ![]() Summary: Our protagonist, Ceony Twill, has just graduated from the Tagis Praff School for the Magically Inclined and is assigned an apprenticeship with Magician Emory Thane. ![]()
